Fed: Howard warned to expect sugar backlash

By Janelle Miles and Lloyd Jones

BRISBANE, Feb 9 AAP - The Howard government has been warned to expect a backlash at
the federal poll later this year after sugar was left out of the Australia-US free trade
deal.

Announcing the deal today, Prime Minister John Howard admitted he felt sorry for canegrowers
but said he could not have walked away from the deal and deny other benefits to the rest
of the economy.

Far north Queensland canegrower Vince Reghenzani said the federal government had sold
the sugar industry down the drain.
