IF A TREE FALLS UNDERWATER...

The lengths-or more accurately, depths-to which some are going to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were evident recently in Tucurui, Brazil, where a dam project was undertaken without considering what would happen to the flooded land. As a result, trees and other plants over a 1100-square-mile area were buried underwater. When the vegetation decomposed, it released huge amounts of greenhouse gases (along with other effects, such as increased acidity of the water and a dramatic rise in the mosquito population).
