Liberty Looks for New European Plan.

Even after terminating its plans to buy several German cable companies, Liberty Media hopes to expand in Europe, namely through some kind of deal with U.K. operators Telewest and NTL.

"There is a substantial amount of industrial logic if you can combine NTL and Telewest," said Robert Bennett, Liberty's CEO, on a conference call last week to update investors and give the company's financial guidance for 2002.

But NTL's complicated financial structure makes the outcome of a deal uncertain, Bennett said, and if Liberty can't seal a deal in the U.K., it may turn its sights back to the U.S. cable market.
